It’s not about the Trading

When I read Kyle Mcdonald’s book, “One Red Paperclip”, about trading a paperclip for a house, he talked extensively about the fact this project was about the people.

I totally get that now. At first, when I was in the planning stages of getting this game going, it was about the trades.  But now that there have been some trades, something really interesting happens.  The people are so much more of the story. It feels good to know these people are happy about helping me. They trade something they are not using for something they will use, and at the same time are helping me with my huge goal.

And the items themselves are a large part of the story, as well.  A handmade pot, valuable to a grandmother who made a quilt, valuable to the quilter who gave it to newlyweds in trade for a sewing machine.  Who will trade for the sewing machine? Will their item have a story?

That’s why I really want to travel to each trade and do it in person. I want to meet the people and see their piece of the story. The trading will now probably take me outside of my own circle of family and friends. I’m eager to see what happens next!
